Groundhog Day: A Weather Prediction Tradition

Every year on February 2nd, we turn our attention to a small furry creature with an important job: predicting the weather. Welcome to Groundhog Day.

According to tradition, if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow, it will retreat inside, indicating six more weeks of winter. If it doesn’t see its shadow, we can expect an early spring.

While the groundhog’s prediction is all in good fun, the day also marks the midpoint between the winter solstice and spring equinox. It’s a reminder that, regardless of what the groundhog sees, spring is on its way.
